Putting Children First in a Challenging System
Good Divorce Week 2025 – The Year of the Code, reminds family professionals and parents alike that the best outcomes come from keeping children at the centre of every decision.
With court delays increasing by more than a third since 2018, Resolution is calling for early advice and constructive approaches to reduce pressure on the system. For Di Jenner, a family lawyer and Resolution member at Nantes Solicitors, this is more than a campaign message, it’s the foundation of her daily practice.
A Child-Centred Way Forward
“I have been a member of Resolution throughout my 16 years as a family lawyer, and Good Divorce Week is an ideal time to reflect on my own practice,” says Di. “I work mainly with parents to resolve child arrangements. Children are at the forefront of Resolution’s Code of Practice, and helping parents focus on the best possible outcomes for them is at the core of my work.”
She explains that court proceedings should be avoided wherever possible. “At the heart of the Children Act is the ‘no-order principle’, which recognises that it’s best for children when parents can reach agreement themselves. My role is to give clients practical, child-focused advice so they can find solutions that work for their family.”
Guided by the Code of Practice
Resolution’s Code encourages members to support families to put the best interests of any children first and to reduce or manage conflict throughout the process. For Di, these values guide every conversation.
“Even when court involvement is unavoidable, I help parents navigate proceedings calmly and aim for agreement at the earliest opportunity. Keeping communication respectful helps preserve relationships and gives children a more stable future.”
