As Good Divorce Week 2025 celebrates The Year of the Code, family law professionals across the country are reflecting on how Resolution’s Code of Practice helps families separate with dignity and understanding. With record delays in the family courts and rising costs for couples, this year’s campaign emphasises cooperation and early advice as the best path forward.
For Carolyn Harmer, a Resolution member and collaborative lawyer at Nantes Solicitors, these principles have long shaped the way she supports clients through separation.
A Collaborative Approach to Family Law
“I have practised as a family lawyer since 1999 and as a collaborative lawyer since 2009,” explains Carolyn. “Collaborative law offers an alternative way for divorcing couples to resolve matters. Each party appoints a collaboratively trained solicitor, and the clients and solicitors work together in a series of meetings to reach a settlement. If needed, other professionals such as accountants can be involved to ensure every aspect is properly considered.”
She believes this approach helps couples maintain control of their own decisions. “Each party still receives individual legal advice, but we work collectively to achieve the best possible outcome for both sides. During my initial meetings, I always discuss all forms of dispute resolution so clients can make an informed decision that feels right for them.”
Living the Code in Practice
Resolution’s Code of Practice promotes honesty, integrity and respect, encouraging solicitors to focus on long-term wellbeing rather than short-term wins. For Carolyn, these values are second nature. “It’s about ensuring that people leave the process with dignity and a fair result, especially where children are involved. A calm, respectful environment leads to better outcomes for everyone.”
